Is caring a vocational career?

I’ve recently been privileged enough to see some of our carers in action with the clients and the families who use our services. I say a privilege because that was how it felt, it felt a real privilege as a manager to see with my own eyes the wonderful relationships that our carers have with our customers and the real difference that they make everyday.

The dictionary defines vocation as a fitness for a particular career, a dedication, and I think that sums up our carers. They have all the skills and knowledge needed to do their job but alongside that they have a dedication to meet the needs of our customers, they go above and beyond to make sure they really make a difference.

So yes, caring is a vocation, it’s more than just a job.

    Hi All

I worked out in the comunity ‘Area West for the first time in a long time, and I heard nothing but praise for the staff in that area. Due to all the compliments clients have give I think the carers feel it is a vocation.

To have the ability to make a person feel cared for a carer must be able to encompass everything that is instumental in making them feel valued, respected and empowered, this is a skill that requires a certain type of person – caring is definately a vocational career.

A carer is a person who looks after a relative/friend and a care assistant is someone who does it professionally. A care assistant must be trained to at least minimum standard requirements. However both, a carer and a care assistant should have certain personal qualities.
